The CHI of CHIVA was born from my passions as an educator. For the last 10 years I have worked in public education, and I have been deeply impacted by the young men and women who were a part of my every day. I have an enduring desire to see every student gain access to quality instruction whether in the classroom or on the court. In those 10 years I have watched finances continue to create a deep divide in education and athletics. Helping to close that gap has been a driving force in were I have chosen to teach and coach in my time in Nashville, TN as well as here in Charlotte, NC. 

 

This passion comes from my personal experience as an athlete. My parents and a really talented local coach in my hometown, Tyrone Jenkins, made it possible for me to play competitively on a budget. It has taken me years to understand the sacrifice my parents made - my dad working the night shift on a manufacturing line and my mother taking a huge risk to start a now-successful business in order to pay for my travel team. It had an IMPACT on me. Not just the volleyball I learned, but using that skill in my life now to connect with students. Volleyball has become a huge part of the foundation of many mentoring relationships in my life. I am so thankful for the doors it has opened for me.
